The Pink Book

Since Love, Loss and What I Wore opened in September of 2009, producer Daryl Roth has left a pink notebook backstage in the dressing room for the cast members to share their thoughts with each other.

The actors write notes to each other in this book describing their experience with the show and giving advice to future cast members. Often, the comments are gushing sentiments of how fortunate they feel to have been a part of this production:

“This show will bless your life! I’ve never been more moved by a show.” – Kristin Chenoweth

“I got to work with my own daughter Lucy! How amazing is that?” – Rhea Perlman

“Dreams do come true!” – Myra Lucretia Taylor

“It was more than a theatre event, it is a sisterhood.” – Julie Halston

Other comments are more geared towards reaching out to upcoming cast members and cluing them in on how to succeed in the Love, Loss world:

“My only advice is this – Be your fabulous self. And if you’re running late to the Sunday matinee, for God’s sake don’t take a cab.” – Mary Birdsong

“Whilst performing on stage in LLWIW: If you look down at your script for too long you start to see double and giggle. Beware of this.” – Jane Lynch

Some cast members even describe how the show changed their opinions on clothing!

“I’ve loved my time in Love, Loss. And I love my limited wardrobe now more than ever...” – Katie Finneran

“I just wanna say... This has been the most amazing experience – like lettuce! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I hated clothes before I did this show – that’s all changed, but I still hate my closet and the closet.” – Judy Gold

Throughout the book, various actors have drawn themselves in their favorite or most memorable outfits, just like the audience does:

“6th Grade: My mom made me a poodle skirt. The poodle fell off and, oops...It was see-through. I thought I was Punky Brewster!” – Ashley Austin Morris

“One-piece cashmere sweater-tard (belted) purchased by my grandmother and meant for gym class. Dry clean only.” – Samantha Bee

The Pink Book has been an amazing way for the women of Love, Loss to connect to each other through the show and maintain the sisterhood.

“Thank you for the experience of a lifetime.” – Diane Neal
